BOOT HILL TRUE TO OLD WEST

Boot Hill Museum in Dodge City, Kansas, is one of the top visitor attractions in the country for experiencing the ‘Old West’.

The museum was recognised by U.S. magazine ‘True West’ which annually ranks those institutions that most effectively “Keep the Old West alive throughout the nation and beyond”.

The publication included Boot Hill Museum in its line-up of Top 10 Western Museums for 2016 in recognition of its ‘superior exhibitions and ability to reach all generations through creativity in interpreting the West while fulfilling the institution’s mission’.

In its summing up of the facility True West wrote: “Boot Hill and Dodge City keep the Old West vibrant and relevant for 21st century audiences!”

Boot Hill Museum tells the story of early Dodge City along Front Street. The area’s history dates back to the Native Americans who thrived off the land and the buffalo, while the establishment of the Santa Fe Trail brought settlers to the area.

The arrival of the U.S. Army prompted the building of Fort Dodge and soon to follow was the establishment of a rough and rowdy cattle town known as Dodge City.

The museum is located on the original site of Boot Hill Cemetery and highlights the glory days of town through a range of interactive displays and activities: see gunfight reenactments, enjoy the saloon-style Branch Variety Show, belly up to the bar for a cold sarsaparilla, enjoy some of grandma’s homemade fudge in the General Store or take home an Old West souvenir from the Boot Hill gift shop.

There is also a Cowboy Hall of Fame honoring legendary Kansas cowboys.
