Mackinac’s State Historic Parks Open for 2024
All six of Mackinac State Historic Parks’ attractions, located on Mackinac Island and in Mackinaw City, are now open for the summer season. These living history museums and nature parks offer an immersive experience for visitors exploring Northern Michigan’s rich heritage and stunning landscapes.
Nestled on the historic and vehicle-free Mackinac Island, located between the Upper and Lower Peninsulas of Michigan, Fort Mackinac stands as a testament to the region’s fascinating history. Visitors can step back in time and explore the 14 buildings that have been restored, gaining insights into the strategic significance of this island fortress. Nearby, the Richard and Jane Manoogian Mackinac Art Museum showcases the island’s artistic heritage with a diverse collection of fine and decorative arts. These range from hand-beaded Native American garments to one-of-a-kind pieces from the Victorian era.
Near the docks, the Biddle House offers a glimpse into 19th-century domestic life and highlights the experience of Native Americans.
Mackinaw City is home to Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse, Colonial Michilimackinac and Mill Creek Discovery Park. At the most northern tip in the Lower Peninsula, the city is the perfect destination for travellers. With Lake Michigan on one side and Lake Huron on the other side, it offers a true Great Lakes experience.
Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse helped passing ships navigate through the treacherous waters of the Straits of Mackinac in the 19th century. Today, it invites visitors to climb its tower and enjoy panoramic views.
Colonial Michilimackinac is a restored and reconstructed 1770’s era fort and fur trading centres, where history comes to life through immersive living history demonstrations and archaeological excavations. Historical interpreters representing voyageurs, British soldiers, and French-Canadian merchant families perform demonstrations to transport visitors back to 1777.
New for summer 2024 is an exhibit that explores the lives of slaves during the 17th and 18th centuries.
Meanwhile, Mill Creek Discovery Park offers outdoor enthusiasts the chance to explore the area’s natural beauty through hiking trails and interactive exhibits.
